Chapter Fourteen

Even though Nicholas understood why Noel needed to go, it was still difficult. He’d grown accustomed to her being there with him all the time. Noel greeted him warmly when he got home. He greeted her much the same way when he was home before she was. Nicholas had gotten used to waking up in the morning and having the love of his life cradled in his arms, sleeping securely, soundly, safely. Although Noel said she wouldn’t be gone for long, Nicholas was already ready for her return, and she hadn’t even left yet. Of course, he would miss her, that went without saying, but as the two sat in the back of the Maybach at the private airport, there was a part of Nicholas that didn’t want to let her go. Noel was home for him.

“I guess I should get out of the car now,” Noel said, clutching Nicholas’ hand and leaning into him, feeling his masculine chest pressed against her flesh. Noel wanted to go home. She wanted to see her family. Despite the differences they sometimes had, Noel missed them. Yet, she didn’t want to leave Nicholas, not even for a little while; Noel loved him that much.

“I should say yes,” Nicholas began, “I mean that’s the right thing to say, but,” he paused.

There was understanding in the silence.

“I feel the same way,” Noel said, turning to face him looking deeply into his mahogany eyes. He was her peace. He was her rest. Nicholas was everything Noel wanted and needed, and now she was leaving him.

Nick’s large hand took her face and held it gently as Noel further inclined herself to him. He kissed the top of her head, and then his mouth swooped down to capture hers. Noel pressed her open lips to his. Nick’s lips were warm and sweet and demanding on hers. Noel languished in the sweetness and weakened from the demand of the slow, soul-shaking kisses Nicholas blessed her with.

“I’ve got to go, or I won’t go,” Noel hummed against his lips. If she didn’t move at that moment, she wouldn’t have. So, Noel did, kissing Nick softly one more time before turning away from him. Josiah was there to open the door, but Noel didn’t wait, opening the car door herself, and stepping out. Her eyes welled with tears as she walked quickly down the red carpet towards the private jet. The stewardess and the captain were there to greet her as she ascended the stairs. Noel managed a polite smile, but that didn’t stop the tears from spilling onto her cheeks as she moved past them. She knew she would miss Nicholas, but Noel didn’t know it would be so hard to actually go. When she sat down in her seat, her eyes naturally turning towards the window, Noel saw Nick standing there outside of the car. His eyes were as sad as Noel’s.

The engine of the jet roared to life. Noel wouldn’t stop crying until well after the jet was cruising in the air.
